  Anatomy of a Website Redesign

It's probably a cliche that is used too often, but this site really did have humble beginnings (bleech!). I wanted teach myself HTML and this gave me the outlet. Back in 1999, the site was called The Deafening Silence. I was a disc jockey at a local radio station and my morning show was called The Deafening Silence. I played pretty much anything from New Age to Industrial and wanted to use the site as a resource for my listeners. However, I was also a geek who loved all things technological. As time went on, I realised that having a dual focus meant that I didn't do either of them well. So the geek in me won out and The Deafening Silence became a technology news site.

As I was getting ready to move to my current host in the Spring of 2000, I was trying to think up a new name for the site. Since I had already registered www.d-silence.com, I really didn't want to change to a new URL...then Fate intervened. Bill from the late, great G256.com posted a link to one of my articles, but got the site name wrong. He called it Digital Silence, and well, the rest is history. The name fit the site perfectly. With the new name, came the first quasi-professional look for the site.

The idea for a redesign of the site actually came about two years ago. Unfortunately, there were more starts and stops than a bus in the city! Mungler began work in early 2001. You can see one of his early ideas here. Unfortunately, "real life" caught up with Mungler and he had to abandon work on the design. Once again, Mr. Delles step in to pick up the slack. You can see some of his work here , here and here. We thought we were getting close. However, Mr. Delles is not an HTML programmer. So we started looking around for someone to help with the HTML. We settled on Mohsin (from Shapps). He took the ideas from Mungler and Mr. Delles, but put his own signature to the design. The result of Mohsin's work is what you see today.
