Recordable CD/Digital Audio Systems - Oak Technology announced a strategic relationship with PortalPlayer to provide platform solutions for PC-Free recording and playback of digital media content to consumer electronics manufacturers. The companies intend to jointly develop a reference design for a next- generation digital media player/recorder, as well as future digital music products and technologies. Initial collaboration will focus on development of a reference design for recordable optical storage products that support direct encoding of digital audio content in MP3 file formats, without the need for a personal computer. The reference design will incorporate Oak's recently introduced OTI-8001 consumer CD recordable controller and PortalPlayer's Tango digital media platform, which is based on the industry's first single chip embedded controller capable of real-time MP3 recording and playback [-more-]

Kenwood Doing Dolby Pro Logic II Surround-Sound - Creating 5.1 channel surround-sound from traditional 2-channel stereo recordings is now possible thanks to Dolby Pro Logic II Audio technology, first available to the market from Cirrus Logic Inc. in its Crystal CS49326 DSP audio decoder chip. The chip is being used by Kenwood USA in its new Pro Logic II A/V receivers. Dolby Pro Logic II is a new surround sound algorithm that is backwards compatible with its predecessor Dolby Pro Logic and provides new music and movie modes to create a higher bandwidth stereo rear surround sound. The market leader in audio decoders for the A/V receiver market, shipping to seven of the top 10 consumer brands, Cirrus Logic is the first manufacturer to provide the new Pro Logic II decoding technology with its Crystal audio decoders [-more-]

Marantz ER3000 Home Cinema System - The ER3000 DVD Home Cinema System includes an integrated center unit combining a DVD player, an A/V amplifier and an AM/FM tuner as well as 5.1-channel amplifier and speaker system. The Cinemarium features 2-way satellite speakers and subwoofer, as well as built-in MPEG-2 AAC decoding for BS digital broadcast. The DVD unit can play CD-R/CD-RW disks, in addition to DVD, CD, Video CD and CD-DA disks.
